Getting Started
You Just Got Called to Be Over Missionary Work for Your Ward. Where Should You Start?
Pace Satterthwaite

Where Do I Start?
I felt completely unprepared when I was called to be the high councilor over missionary work for my stake.
I didn’t know what to do and wondered if I was failing.
But then I remembered something.
I had been here before.
As a returned missionary, I was called the ward mission leader in my YSA ward.
At first, I felt the same uncertainty, but I learned what worked over time.
I want to share what helped me so you can hit the ground running in your calling.
1. Read the General Handbook (Section 23.6)
The best place to start is the General Handbook, specifically Section 23.6.
This section lays out the roles of the bishopric, elders quorum, Relief Society, ward mission leader, and missionaries in missionary work.
One of the most important things to remember is that missionary work is a team effort.
The bishopric works closely with the elder's quorum and Relief Society presidencies to lead the effort.
If a ward mission leader is called, they support these presidencies instead of working on their own.
The handbook also emphasizes the importance of ministering, retention, and creating a simple ward mission plan.
Understanding these roles lets you see how your calling fits into the bigger picture.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. The Lord has already given us a blueprint to follow.
2. Study Preach My Gospel (Chapter 13)
You’ve probably heard of Preach My Gospel.
Most people think it’s only for full-time missionaries but also an incredible resource for ward leaders.
Chapter 13, “Stake and Ward Leaders,” is especially helpful.
It explains how members and missionaries should work together to share the gospel and help new members feel at home.
One principle that stands out is that members lead the way in missionary work.
Full-time missionaries do fantastic work, but members are the ones who create lasting connections.
If you’ve never read Preach My Gospel, start now.
It’s full of simple, powerful principles that will guide you in your calling.
This Is Just the Beginning
Getting started with the handbook and Preach My Gospel is a great foundation, but there’s so much more to explore.
Stay tuned for future videos and posts where we’ll dive deeper into specifics, like how to run effective coordination meetings, create meaningful ward mission plans, and support new and returning members.
There’s a lot to learn, but you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Let’s work together to help others come unto Christ, one step at a time.
